Philip Dunton Murphy, born August 16, 1957, in Needham, Massachusetts, is an American politician, financier, and diplomat who has served as the 56th Governor of New Jersey since January 16, 2018. A member of the Democratic Party, Murphy was re-elected in November 2021, becoming the first Democratic governor in New Jersey to win a second term in 44 years. Murphy’s career includes significant roles in finance and public service. Before entering politics, he was a senior executive at Goldman Sachs, where he held various leadership positions from 1983 to 2005, including President of Goldman Sachs (Asia) and Global Co-head of the Investment Management Division. He later served as National Finance Chair for the Democratic National Committee from 2006 to 2009, helping to raise substantial funds for the party. Murphy’s diplomatic experience includes serving as the United States Ambassador to Germany from 2009 to 2013, appointed by President Barack Obama.
